Plausibly meditative
I've started waking up unaccountably early. 5am most days. Not deliberately, I just wake up. And it's not a bad thing, I enjoy the mornings so I get up. But then I find myself at a loose end. It doesn't feel like reading time, it's too soon for work, I'd like to go out for a coffee but nowhere's open, so I've tried to find a thing to do that fits the moment.
So I've decided to try playing some music and sharing it. I've become a huge fan of all these YouTubers who film themselves doing mixes. It's a good way to listen to music and it's somehow more live and personal than a playlist. There's a tiny hint of performance and connection to it. And it's giving myself a good reason to actually listen to it. I'm too easily distractible if it's just on. I want something that could plausibly pass for meditative.
I especially like the 'at home' ness of these...
So I thought I'd try and do something of my own:
They're also on Mixcloud.
I've not yet worked out:
- What to point the camera at. I don't want to do stills, I feel like there should be some sort of gentle liveness to it. But I don't like being too close to the camera, especially when I'm just sitting there cueing things up on my laptop. And I haven't got the space to be across the room. I think that might be a bit different when I've got the turntables set up properly.
- How to talk. I'd like to indulge my Early Show fantasies and pretend to tell you about the weather and the traffic. But, right now, I can't get the levels right on the mic.
- How to include other, more interesting bits of audio. Maybe some fragments of 4764. Maybe some things from cassette. Some found sound.
I'd like it to become a bit more like radio and a bit less like an algorithmic feed, but, for now, I'm just happy to practise the habit.
